Day 1: Lima
|
Arrival in Lima. Pick up and transfer to your lodge, the Hotel or similar, located in downtown central Lima. This is a beautiful colonial home in the colonial heart of Lima and a great base to explore the museums and historical sites of the capital.
Day 2: Lima (B)
After a good breakfast, a visit to colonial Lima.
Return to your lodge.

Day 3: Lima - Cusco (B)
After an early breakfast, we will take you to the airport for your short flight to Cusco. After the 1 hour flight, you will land in heady Cusco (3400m or 11,000 feet). We will pick you up and transfer you to your lodge, the Amaru Hostel or similar, located in the centre of Cusco. This lovely lodge for example is located in the San Blas region of Cusco and is the ideal starting point for your visit to the ancient capital of the Incas.
Lunch on your own (we recommend something light on your first day at high altitude).
In the early afternoon, you will start a fully guided visit with an English speaking guide to the four ruins outside of Cusco, the Sacsayhuaman Fortress; Kenko, Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay. Also included in the tour will be the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Koricancha Sun Temple. Free evening to enjoy Cusco, its bars and restaurants and its bustling nightlife.
Day 4: Sacred Valley River Rafting (B & L)
After breakfast, pick up from your lodge for the drive to Panchar, some 90 minutes from Cusco. After a briefing in techniques and safety, you will start your rafting on class III and IV rapids, lasting for over 4 hours. Picnic lunch by the banks of the river before returning to Cusco.
Day 5. Cusco Mountain Biking Maras - Moray (B & L)
After a good breakfast, trip to just outside Chinchero where you will start your mountain bike ride, totaling over 22 miles on back roads and trails. Climbing several hills, witnessing scenes of rural Andean life, you will arrive at the Inca site of Moray. This is a fascinating, unique ruin; a fabulous amphitheatre of terracing that was used as an agricultural experimental site by the Incas. From here the route is mostly flat and downhill, with one steep and fairly technical downhill followed by a short but steep uphill. Those who would prefer to ride in the support vehicle are free to do so. After riding for about 45 minutes you will reach the village of Maras for a picnic lunch. Visit to the salt pans where people from Maras have diverted a salt-laden spring coming out of the hillside, evaporating the water to collect salt. Arrival to the Urubamba for the transfer to your lodge in Ollantaytambo, hostel Sauce or similar. Briefing on the Royal Inca trail.
Day 6: Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu (B, L & D)
Early wake up and breakfast in order to catch the train heading to Machu Picchu. Start of the Royal Inca trail, once leaving the train. Cross the hanging bridge over the Urubamba River to the Inca complex of Cachabamba. After a brief visit of this site, a four hour ascent to the ruins of Wi�ay Wayna 2700m/8829 ft; an important Inca spiritual site, and one of the finest of all Inca ruins. At this point the trail joins with the main Inca Trail. From here you will be walking on Inca Trail cuts to Machu Picchu reaching the Intipunku or Gate of the Sun, at 2700m/8829 ft. From here the trail winds downhill (45 minutes) into the lost citadel of Machu Picchu, at 2400m/7872. Arrival to Machu Picchu and take the bus down to Aguas Calientes. Accommodation at thePresident Hostel or similar. Dinner provided.

Day 7: Cusco - Machu Picchu (B)
After an early breakfast, catch the bus up to the awesome Machu Picchu ruins. Recently declared one of the new 7 Wonders of the World, this will be a day to remember. A tour with an English speaking guide of this fabulous lost city of the Incas rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. With houses and temples surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side, this is truly an awe inspiring site. Afternoon return to Cusco, pick up at the train station and transfer to your lodge.
Day 8: Cusco - Lima (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to Lima. Arrival to Lima airport for your connecting flight home or if you have several hours spare, we can arrange a transfer into Lima for you (enquire about this when booking). |
